About Dr. Al-Kalla

Tarik Al-Kalla, MD, of Weight Loss Specialists of North Texas, specializes in bariatric and general surgery and his services are available in three convenient locations: Denton, Frisco, and Flower Mound, Texas. Dr. Al-Kalla believes that the best way to live your life is one of health and fitness. However, the “optimal” weight one wants to achieve is not the same for each individual. Dr. Al-Kalla’s objective is to get everyone’s BMI under 30 through diet, medication, surgical, or non-surgical procedures.

We have great evidence showing after a certain BMI, medical problems start to become an issue which then makes it difficult to lose weight just by dieting and exercising in order to have a good quality of life. Therefore, to generate the perfect plan for each individual, Dr. Al-Kalla takes the time to identify their strengths and weaknesses in order to come up with their best weight loss plan by teaching them about their options. More importantly, to also continue to follow his patients' long term to make sure they continue to maintain their optimal weight because as we all have seen and experienced, weight regain is an issue that will never be eliminated if we don’t continue to fight it.

Dr. Al-Kalla received his Doctor of Medicine from Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Lubbock, Texas, then completed his general surgery residency from Spectrum Health/Michigan State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and bariatric and minimally-invasive surgical fellowship at St. Luke’s Surgical Specialists in Kansas City, Missouri. He is well trained in open, laparoscopic and robotic surgery in general and bariatric surgery.

His main interests are in robotic surgery for bariatrics (i.e. sleeve, gastrectomy, Roux en Y gastric bypass, duodenal switch, revisional bariatric surgery), hiatal hernia and reflux surgery (i.e. Nissen/Toupet/Dor fundoplications, LINX placement) and abdominal hernia surgery (i.e. umbilical, ventral, inguinal, incisional, and any other abdominal hernia). He uses minimally invasive techniques whenever possible – even for complex cases – to ensure faster and less painful recovery from surgeries.

While completing his residency training, Dr. Al-Kalla received the Acute Care Surgery Chief award, which is one of the highest honors bestowed to surgical chief residents. It's a testament to his hard work, patient-physician bedside manner, attentiveness, compassion, honesty, patience, leadership, teaching, and clinical ability.
